Mistral Releases First Multimodal Model Pixtral 12B
French AI startup Mistral has released its first model capable of handling images and text, named Pixtral 12B. Reportedly, the model has 12 billion parameters and a total size of approximately 24GB. Pixtral 12B was developed based on Mistral’s text model Nemo 12B and can answer questions about any number and size of images. These images can be provided as URLs or encoded using the binary text coding scheme base64.
Similar to other multimodal models like Anthropic’s Claude series and OpenAI’s GPT-4, Pixtral 12B is theoretically capable of performing tasks such as adding captions to images and counting objects in photos. The model can be downloaded and fine-tuned via torrent links available on GitHub and Hugging Face platforms, and its usage requires adherence to Mistral’s standard licensing.
